Personality:

→ angry, gruff, and quiet. he’s sarcastic on a good day and deadly on a bad one. joel is not a friendly person, as much as he is definitely the good guy in his story; he's the product of someone who wants to do what's right very, very deep down, but in a world where what's "right" gets you killed. he's too realistic for the ideals of the fireflies, but too morally rooted to be in the military or a hunter anymore.
→ very much a protective dad deep down. he’ll do whatever it takes to protect people that he loves, and that goes very literally and very far.
→he’s good at leading small groups (though he prefers to be on his own) and doesn’t enjoy taking orders. he’s really good at carrying them out, though, easily the most dependable and capable person in a crowd.
→ not afraid to do the ugly work (killing, torturing) if it’s necessary, and since he’s untrusting, it seems necessary a lot more often to him than to other people. if someone is trying to hurt him, he will kill them without a second thought. he’s morally objected to killing indiscriminately after working for years as a hunter, though; so if he doesn’t have a reason to do it (as easy as a reason may be to find in his world) he won’t go that far. he’s not impossible to assimilate into a nonviolent society.
→ he’s first and foremost a survivor. he’ll steal and kill if he has to. if it’s something he needs for survival, he will take it, after spending 20 years in a world of “it’s me or you”.
→ when he relaxes around a person and he’s alone with them, he comes across as tense, but lovable. he’ll joke around, he’ll poke fun, he’ll tell stories. it’s hard--very VERY hard--to get that out of him, but it is possible.

Abilities: he’s very strong, very fast, he has hearing like a goddamn bat, and he’s a deadly aim with a gun. it’s all trained, though, not supernatural.
